Install WordPress is one of the first steps to creating a Web page or blog quickly and easily. Thanks to its ease of use and accessibility to anyone with or without experience, you can have your site ready in a few days (even hours!).
However, installing WordPress is not equivalent to having your page ready. It is an important step, but there are other things to do and measures to take.
If you already installed WordPress on your domain, you're on the right track!
Here are some of the main actions you can take to advance in the creation of your blog or website:
Basic configuration and general adjustments
Enter into the main Dashboard and click on Settings> General. There you can modify aspects such as title, email, time zone, date format, users who subscribe to your site (if necessary) and other options.
To improve Google’s positioning and have a good image of URLs, you must change the permalinks. In most cases the default settings make them look like this:
You never have to use your URL like that! It is the most common error in websites.
To modify it, all you have to do is enter into your Dashboard in Settings> Permalinks. Then select the "entry name" option. Thus the URL will have the same keywords that are in the title, and will be much more accessible and have a better search engine ranking.
Eliminates post and page included by default
When WordPress is installed, the platform comes with a post and a page published as a demonstration. The post is called "Hello World!" And "Sample Page" page. There are useful or serve for something? I do not think so, delete them!
To delete them, go to the “Tickets" option, select it and click "Move to Trash" or "Trash". For the page is the same, but in the Pages section.
No matter what type of page that you are creating with WordPress, you do not want to be flooded with SPAM. To avoid this, install the plugin called “Akismet", which is responsible for archiving SPAM automatically so you do not have to deal with “garbage" comments that are useless.
To install Akismet, review the tutorial in the website company.
Now, in the newest version of WordPress, the 4.4.2 version, the platform includes Akismet by default, and you only have to register the user and the website.
Create a Sitemap
A sitemap will let Google know the basic structure of your web site, so you can index your web faster and will also include your new content quickly in their search results.
To create the Sitemap, install the "Google XML Sitemap” plugin, enters the settings menu and create the map first.
Basic SEO settings
To ensure you have the maximum opportunity to position yourself in Google in the best way, it is necessary to setup SEO options (On-Page SEO). This includes installing a SEO basic functions plugin, like SEO by Yoast and All-in-One SEO Pack, all made for WordPress, that helps with titles, descriptions, keywords, etc.
Also create the sitemap as we saw in the previous section, that helps to positioning also. If you want to know how to make a good SEO settings, enter the following tutorial: WordPress SEO Guide.
After install WordPress, personalize the information to the site, modify permalinks, eliminate the sample post and page, install Akismet, create a sitemap and check basic SEO settings, you are ready for the next steps.
